Mame Kurogouchi Presents Her New Spring/Summer 2025 Collection: Katachi
Luxferity, 24.09.2024
The Spring/Summer 2025 collection of Mame Kurogouchi focuses on “Katachi (form)”, one of the most fundamental material elements, exploring a diverse range of objects and natural products sourced from different cultures and eras. By connecting their commonalities through intuition and observation, the collection draws inspiration from the various forms found in everyday life, celebrating the richness of their diversity.

During the creation of 2024 collection, designer Maiko Kurogouchi experienced creating pottery, and the challenges of shaping clay, deepening her interest in form, which led her to a book titled “Nihon no Katachi” (Shapes in Japan). The book explained the close connection between traditional Japanese materials and shapes, as well as the spirituality and beauty contained within cultural artifacts. As a result, Kurogouchi began researching the various “forms” hidden in her daily life.

The collected objects - from pebbles found, beans picked up on the roadside, ceramic buttons by Lucie Rie, factory supplies, porcelain vases, seashells, lanterns, and lacquerwares - were photographed, then blacked out in the notebook. By only leaving its silhouettes, these “forms” lay many symbols, erasing the hierarchy between functional items, art pieces, and natural objects, speaking in a new common language of “form”. The designs that emerge from Kurogouchi’s blacked-out sketches embody garments as “forms” for everyday living, ultimately returning to the daily lives of individuals.

The commonality between the forms of pebbles, shells, and artifacts are a representation of the long journey of their formation, the hidden process of nature or forms brought by chance. This translates into the flowing curves of dresses and asymmetrical silhouettes of tops. The boatneck dresses and series of tops made from superb cotton feature casual materials designed for daily wear, with details like natural draping created by the asymmetrical shapes embodying the body, adding elegance to everyday life. As the body wears these garments, adding further dimensionality, it embodies a simple “form” that breathes life. This highlights that our own bodies are also creations of nature, suggesting that the continuous interactions between body and fabric leads to the constant creation of new “forms” each day.

The initial interest in “forms” gradually shifts to an exploration of the internal qualities that shape them. The structural framework of traditional lanterns observed in Kyoto influences the graphic knit patterns, expressed through a radiating design reminiscent of pleats. This inspiration is seen in knit dresses and cardigans with sleeve volume, as well as long dresses featuring delicate pleats and intricately cut shirts, evoking rich shapes of the lanterns themselves.

The autumn grasses depicted on Gifu lanterns to welcome coolness in summer, or Ryukyu Raden work (mother-of-pearl inlay) craftsmanship include hidden forms of Japanese landscapes. In Kurogouchi’s memory, the real and imagined landscapes intertwine to create unique patterns inspired by the beauty of nature, which are then woven into garments. Jacquard fabrics made with shimmering aurora threads reminiscent of the noctilucent shell, produce soft curves in cocoon jackets, dresses, and skirts, offering an evocative yet understated quality. The interplay of light and shadow on the surface enhances the beauty of the patterns and creates a voluminous effect, allowing the wearer to feel as if they are adorned with the essence of Raden lacquerware itself.
