Mame Kurogouchi Presents Her New Fall Winter 2025 Collection: Katachi
Luxferity, 04.03.2025

Mame Kurogouchi Fall Winter 2025 collection continues to contemplate “Form”. Building upon the previous season’s exploration—where shapes were traced from the natural world to artisanal crafts—this season, designer Maiko Kurogouchi seeks to materialise a vision of uniquely beautiful forms. She sculpts them with her own hands, imbuing each with a tactile softness and a sense of three-dimensional depth.

At the heart of this collection lies The Forms of Japan (1978, Tankosha), a book that also served as a reference in the previous season. From a pure fascination with silhouette, the journey now turns toward the traditional lacquerware captured in its pages—objects that embody both structural beauty and an inherent tenderness of texture. These delicate surfaces breathe life into the paper-cut forms crafted by Kurogouchi herself, merging with intricate pattern-making and rich textiles to shape a collection defined by weightless poise and a supple embrace of the body.

A standout within the collection, the down series carries the elegant presence of a dress while evoking the soft, rounded contours of polished pebbles, kagami mochi, or billowing clouds of spun sugar. Multiple down components are seamlessly fused through meticulous pattern-making, creating an organic, almost living volume. This interplay of naturally occurring, serendipitous forms and the gentle, lustrous curves reminiscent of lacquerware lends a sense of enveloping warmth to the collection. Expressed through asymmetrical silhouettes, voluminous sleeves, wide collars that wrap around the neck, and bold tucks, these elements compose a poetic narrative of form and fluidity.

A striking palette of crimson and scarlet—hues inspired by lacquerware—stands in quiet contrast to the monochrome tones that accentuate shape and depth, defining the collection’s colour story. An asymmetrically draped jersey dress bridges ceremonial elegance with everyday ease, while a knit dress, with undulating sleeves and hems reminiscent of paper lanterns, plays with shadow and light to reveal the depth of red in its gradation. A dress that juxtaposes the brand’s signature floral jacquard against plush velvet quietly echoes the contrast found within lacquerware—the profound black concealed within a vessel’s vermillion surface—suggesting a harmonious coexistence of dualities.

Time’s passing and form’s transience are captured through the traditional marbling technique of Suminagashi, —a centuries-old Japanese art where ink is delicately floated on water, creating fluid, ever-changing patterns—expressed in cocoon-like dresses and voluminous ruffled tops. Amidst the collection’s profound dark tones, sculptural white pieces create an interplay of volume and weightlessness, while bold strokes of orange pierce through with vibrancy—imbuing the collection with an essence of life, purity, and the energetic hues of the everyday. Iconic botanical motifs, expressed through embroidery, jacquard, and knitwear, embody the season’s spirit—like autumn leaves celebrating the arrival of crisp air.

The collection’s reverence for form extends to its accessories: earrings reminiscent of scattered petals, square-cut pumps and rounded ballet shoes, and a newly introduced leather bag adorned with neckline-inspired cutouts—all embodying the poetic essence of shape in motion.
