Hearts & Arrows - A Masterpiece of Diamond Cutting

An ideally cut diamond that has Hearts and Arrows (H&A) is considered a masterpiece of diamond cutting. Hearts & Arrows diamonds are rare, precision-cut round diamonds. The cut must be perfectly executed with extreme precision to achieve the "ideal proportions" that characterize this cut. Because of their exact angles and symmetry, they show a hearts-and-arrows pattern when viewed through a special magnifying glass. Arrows are visible from the top of the diamond (crown), and hearts are visible when the diamond is face-down (pavilion).

The incident light on the diamond, which is perfectly reflected through its 57 facets, creates an extraordinarily high brilliance and fire, which unfolds even in dim candlelight or white artificial light. The diamond appears visually whiter, larger and more brilliant than other diamonds. The Hearts & Arrows cut is rated on a scale from "excellent" (excellent) to "ideal plus" (most symmetrical), as illustrated in the image below:

A royal and perfectly symmetric cut – created by pure coincidence

This special and rare cut was created by pure coincidence in Japan in the 1980s by diamond cutter Takanori Tamuri. While working on a gemstone he discovered that during certain cutting processes a heart and arrow pattern is created by the reflected light. In 1988, the name Hearts & Arrows was finally created for this cut, which is now one of the most popular and rarest diamond cuts in the world.

A certified precious and rare solitaire

Very few diamonds in the world are cut to the optical symmetry of Hearts & Arrows.

This is largely due to the greater expertise of diamond cutters and the larger quantity of rough diamonds that must be additionally polished to produce diamonds with this precise optical symmetry. Diamond cutters take up to three times longer to cut Hearts & Arrows cut quality diamonds, losing much more of the original diamond rough. Each stage of production must be carefully traversed in the process, with the use of special tools and high-quality cutting wheels and, in some cases, 100x magnification.

The new Queen of Hearts & Arrows solitaire by KURZ in platinum is now available in all KURZ boutiques in various diamond sizes starting from 0.50 ct G SI1 / CHF 5450 (RRP) with a GIA certificate and a Hearts & Arrows Excellent Cut certificate from KURZ.
