During the ceremony, Mayor Gilberto Petrucci bestowed the honorary citizenship of Penne on Brioni’s CEO, Mehdi Benabadji, in recognition of the School’s importance and as a symbolic gesture to commemorate the House’s longstanding commitment to safeguard and strengthen craftsmanship in Penne and the Abruzzo region, and Italy more widely. The school’s mission to educate the next generation of tailors compliments Brioni’s ongoing portfolio of initiatives and will enhance the company’s close relationship and development of the territory, where the House has developed its craftsmanship for over sixty years and its unparalleled sartorial excellence that stems from this dedication to craft; the heart of Brioni’s identity.

In his welcome speech, Mehdi Benabadji reinforced Brioni’s dedication, “The reopening of our school today is a natural evolution of our longstanding commitment - seamlessly integrated with our other initiatives that support and safeguard artisanry in Italy,” he stated. “These initiatives stem from a deep desire to transmit skills and values that go beyond the creation of a product, rooted in tradition, craftsmanship and Slow Luxury. Every initiative we pursue aims to celebrate and uphold our guiding principles, countering the speed of fashion today.”

Named after Nazareno Fonticoli, master tailor and visionary entrepreneur, who founded Brioni with business partner Gaetano Savini, the Nazareno Fonticoli School of Haute Tailoring opened its doors on 23rd September. Today’s ceremony welcomed these first students as well as special guests from Nazareno Fonticoli’s family including his daughter, Maria Vittoria Fonticoli.

Attending students have already completed the first three weeks of their curriculum under the guidance of Brioni’s master tailors and technical teachers. The two-year course has a duration of 1,300 hours for each year of training with graduates leaving with unparalleled skills and an experience that represents an immersion in the heart of the best Italian craftsmanship. Students will also be taught Brioni’s guiding principles, contained in its “Art of Slow Luxury” Manifesto. As a reflection of the House’s intentional business model, the Manifesto details Brioni’s commitment to Slow Luxury across all business areas, promoting the value of the precious materials and resources used as well as the artisans who create their collections.

During the ceremony’s welcome speech, Brioni’s CEO also revealed that the school’s first cohort of 16 students will be granted Scholarships to cover 85 percent of their enrolment fees, and further, if trainees pass the intermediate exam at the end of the first year and the final exam at the end of the two-year course, he or she will be rewarded with a full Scholarship and a refund of any fees accordingly.

“The work that Brioni has been carrying out with dedication for decades exemplifies the ability to synthesize tradition, creativity and craftsmanship excellence that characterize Made in Italy. We are happy for this reason that on the occasion of the CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards 2024, Brioni was awarded the Craft and Artisanship prize. For fashion today, it is increasingly important to preserve and pass on the craft tradition by encouraging and training young talents, and the announcement of the reopening of the Scuola di Alta Sartoria Nazareno Fonticoli is excellent news for the fashion community and for the many young people who will attend it. Investing in artisan training, in fact, is indispensable to ensure the transmission of the knowledge and skills that make Made in Italy unique in the world in the production of high quality,” stated Carlo Capasa, President of the National Chamber for Italian Fashion.

Stefania Lazzaroni, Director General of Altagamma, added, “Manufacturing is the beating heart of Made in Italy excellence and is a heritage of skills to be protected and handed down to future generations. High-end companies in the next 5 years will need 276,000 technical-professional profiles (75,000 in fashion), but about 50 percent of companies will have difficulty finding them. Brioni's reopening of the Scuola di Alta Sartoria Nazareno Fonticoli represents a concrete example in support of Italian tailoring art and a significant contribution to the resolution of this issue. This initiative, together with Brioni's participation in the Altagamma 'Adopt a School' project, testifies to Brioni's commitment over time to enhancing the know-how and skills that make our country the leader in the production of goods and services for Altagamma.”

In addition to the new Nazareno Fonticoli School of Haute Tailoring, Brioni previously launched several initiatives under the Brioni Foundation to support training and local development, including collaborations with important local schools such as the IIS ‘Luca da Penne - Mario dei Fiori in Penne’ and the IIS ‘Vincenzo Moretti’ Higher Education Institute in Roseto degli Abruzzi, within Altagamma's ‘Adopt a School’ program, and a Training Course of Tailoring Operator in collaboration with Confindustria Abruzzo Medio Adriatico, aimed at young people and adults looking for a new career path. Brioni also launched a partnership with the Accademia Costume e Moda through the new Level I Academic Master's Degree in “Menswear Design” starting on 19 November, which includes an intensive course at the Brioni ateliers, in addition to which the House is donating 10 scholarships.
