Make laundry whiter
There is nothing better than baking soda, renowned for its whitening properties. A tablespoon
in the drum during washing and that’s it! From time to time, you can also use Bleu Guimet,
as my grandmother used to do.
How to hang clothes and avoid folds
In general, it’s best to remove wrinkles from your towels, sheets and clothes by shaking them firmly before hanging. It softens the fibers and prevents creasing. A tower dryer is preferable to a clothes horse, it takes up less space and much more laundry. A few golden rules:
- Dry your shirts on a hanger and stretch the fabric at the seams level, at the top of the back at shoulder level, along sleeves and cuffs, and along the front buttonholes and buttons. This prevents the fabric, especially cotton, to shrink.
- T-shirts should also be dried on a hanger, either from the top or bottom, but never from the middle, as it creates a fold very difficult to iron, and can also alter the pattern - if there is one.
- Wool or cashmere sweaters should be dried flat to avoid distorting the fabric.
- Pants and jeans should be hung by the hem.
- Dishcloths and towels can be hung on the washing line, on the half to be ironed.
Never dry your linen under direct sunlight, as it yellows the fabric and forget clothespins, they leave marks.
Miracle stain removers
Methylated spirit. It’s an excellent multi-purpose stain remover, for lipstick, blood or red wine for example. Whatever the fabric and its color, simply pat the stain with methylated spirit, then soak it with detergent before putting in the machine. There’s also white vinegar, an excellent anti-limescale product. One tablespoon with fabric softener will be enough.
