The KARL LAGERFELD Fall 2021 women’s collection is inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s passion for cinema and some of his favorite movies from the 1920s and 30s. There’s an aesthetic of Art Deco glamour combined with contemporary touches and artisan details. The look combines the elegance of Style Moderne with KARL’s signature rock-chic edge and monogram prints, as past, present and future converge for a new age of chic.

Inspired by the film Grand Hotel, the first delivery embraces elements of 1930s costume design — it’s dramatic, artistic, and filled with rich color pops in vivid jewel tones. Opulent texture plays a key role, as seen in a faux leather pleated skirt, a burgundy leather dress that doubles as a gilet, and faux leather pants with bow details on the cuffs. Feminine styles meet laidback sophistication, ranging from silk blouses to a bouclé hoodie with puffed sleeves, a metallic red monogram jacquard knit, and a sweatshirt dress embellished with rushed metallic thread and rhinestone tape. Mimicking a piece found in Karl Lagerfeld’s closet, there’s a poplin white shirt silhouette with a tonal monogram pattern and refreshed collar details — inspired by the legend himself and updated for today.

The second delivery channels the silent 1920s horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; Karl Lagerfeld was known to love the film and its use of graphic angles — from straight edges to oblique and curving lines. This translates into the collection in bold outline details on tipping, binding and piping on shirt collars. Key pieces include a tailored jersey blazer with matching high-waisted pants (ideal for working from home) and a fashion-forward blazer inspired by a KARL LAGERFELD archive piece. As the weather starts to chill, tactile faux fur beckons to be worn in a bomber jacket, a monogram coat, and a gilet. A classic shirt-dress is available in black and mint green, while a more fitted dress is crafted from jersey for a formal-meets-casual effect.

As the holiday season approaches, Babylon Berlin — which is set in 1920s Berlin — inspires a look that’s festive, playful and feminine. Statement eveningwear includes glittering party dresses that mimic iconic “flapper” silhouettes, with metallic details in gold, black, gunmetal and lilac. For daytime wear, there’s an organza sleeve sweater, a bouclé hoodie and a white poplin shirt; no matter the look, it can be topped with a black and hot pink monogram coat in the softest faux fur.
