Rolex Presents Three New Versions Of The Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31
Luxferity, 06.04.2022
A classic, reimagined
A splash of colour. A poetic shimmer. A sense of renewal. The dials that decorate the new Datejust 31 are bursting with fresh energy and full of promise.
Rolex is presenting three new versions of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 with striking floral-motif dials. Calling to mind wild summer meadows, the design comprises 24 flowers that stand out distinctly from one another thanks to their finishes – either sunray, matt or grained. Each of the flowers is lit from within by a diamond set into the centre.
The floral-motif dial is azzurro blue on the first new timepiece – a white Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and white gold) fitted with a fluted bezel. On the second watch, crafted from 18 ct yellow gold, it is in olive green, and on the third – an Everose Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and Everose gold) – it is in silver. On the second and third watches the bezel is set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds, and they are equipped with a President bracelet and a Jubilee bracelet respectively.
The new versions of the Datejust 31 are equipped with calibre 2236, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling them to display the hours, minutes, seconds and date.
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.
Timeless style
The Datejust is the archetype of the classic watch according to Rolex, thanks to functions and aesthetics that never go out of fashion. Launched in 1945, it was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial, and consolidated all the major innovations that the brand had contributed to the modern wristwatch until then. The Datejust has spanned eras while retaining the enduring aesthetic characteristics that make it so instantly recognizable.
Rolesor, a marriage of gold and steel
Rolesor, the combination of gold and Oystersteel on a Rolex watch, has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, when the name was registered. It is a meeting of two metals: one, noble and precious, attractive for its lustre and stability; the other, highly resistant to corrosion, assuring strength and reliability. All of these qualities mirror the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch.
On the new white Rolesor version of the Datejust 31, the bezel is made of white gold, while the winding crown, middle case, bracelet and clasp are in Oystersteel. On the new Everose Rolesor version, the bezel, winding crown and centre links of the bracelet are in Everose gold, while the case and outer links of the bracelet are in Oystersteel.
The Oyster case, symbol of waterproofness
A paragon of robustness and elegance, the 31 mm Oyster case of the new Datejust 31 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). Its middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel, a particularly corrosion-resistant alloy, or from 18 ct yellow gold. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Twinlock winding crown, fitted with a double waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the watch’s movement.
Perpetual calibre 2236
The new versions of the Datejust 31 are equipped with calibre 2236, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2014 and has been fitted on this model since 2018. At the forefront of watchmaking technology, this self-winding mechanical movement led to the filing of several patents, and offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks, convenience and reliability.
Calibre 2236 is fitted with a Syloxi hairspring that is produced by Rolex and patented. This silicon hairspring has a patented geometry that ensures the calibre’s regularity in any position. The movement also contains a paramagnetic nickel-phosphorus escape wheel. The oscillator is fitted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. Calibre 2236 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.
Oyster, President and Jubilee bracelets
The new white Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and white gold) of the Datejust 31, with the azzurro-blue, floral-motif dial is fitted with an Oyster bracelet. Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet remains the most universal bracelet in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness.
The version in 18 ct yellow gold with the olive-green, floral-motif dial features a President bracelet. Created specially for the launch of the prestigious Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956, the three-piece link President bracelet, made only from 18 ct gold or 950 platinum, is still reserved exclusively for the Day-Date and precious metal versions of the Datejust. The new Everose Rolesor watch (combining Oystersteel and Everose gold), with a silver, floral-motif dial is equipped with a Jubilee bracelet. Supple and comfortable, the fivepiece link Jubilee bracelet was specially created for the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, which was launched in 1945.
The Oyster bracelet on the white Rolesor version is equipped with a folding Oysterclasp and includes the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. The President bracelet of the 18 ct yellow gold timepiece has an elegant concealed folding Crownclasp and ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance its flexibility and longevity. This clasp is also present on the Jubilee bracelet of the Everose Rolesor version. In addition, all three watches benefit from a concealed attachment system that ensures seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and case.
Superlative Chronometer certification
Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and selfwinding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone.
The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
