Europe’s Longest-running Golf Tournament Returns In 2021: Omega Masters Crans Montana

Delivering top-level golf at high altitudes since 1923, the OMEGA Masters is a unique event on the global sporting calendar, with a distinguished history that pre-dates the luxury watchmaker’s partnership. Back on course after a year’s absence due to the global pandemic, the 2021 edition promises a welcome return to the spectacular event, which attracts some of the world’s best players, including the brand’s own ambassadors.

HISTORY

Europe’s Longest-running Golf Tournament Returns In 2021: Omega Masters Crans Montana

The OMEGA Masters is one of the most prestigious golf competitions held on European soil. Originally called the Swiss Open, the tournament changed its name to the European Masters in 1983. After serving as co-sponsor of the tournament, OMEGA became the title sponsor in 2001.

Despite the many name changes, the venue has remained the same since 1939, making it the oldest golf tournament in Europe to be played on the same course every year. This year’s edition marks the 74th time the tournament tees off at Cranssur-Sierre Golf Club in the Swiss mountains.

OMEGA LOVES SPORT

To play golf masterfully requires a keen eye, steady hand and commitment to precision, so it is not surprising that OMEGA has such a love for the game, especially when you factor in golf’s obvious aesthetic appeal. Building on that passion, the Swiss watchmaker has enjoyed a number of dedicated partnerships over the years – not only with organisations and tournaments, but also with an impressive line-up of golfing ambassadors, including Major winners such as Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Sergio Garcia.

Of course the Swiss brand’s commitment to sport extends well beyond the fairways of the world. At the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, OMEGA served as Official Timekeeper for the 29th time since 1932 - and will do so again at Beijing 2022. Over the decades, OMEGA has developed and introduced extraordinary innovations in timekeeping technology, trusted by athletes, sports judges and spectators. This expertise has led to long-standing timekeeping commitments in athletics, sailing, swimming, bobsleigh and monobob.

THE OMEGA MASTERS

OMEGA has long been title sponsor of the European Masters. The tournament, steeped in history and tradition, is the oldest on the European continent and is one of the leading events on the Swiss
sporting calendar. OMEGA’s support has helped the organisers pursue their goal of attracting even more of the world’s golfing elite to Crans-Montana. Sanctioned by both the European and Asian Tours since 2009, the OMEGA Masters forges a strong bond between two golf-loving continents.

COLLIN MORIKAWA

In the summer of 1904, Canadian George Lyon stepped onto the greens of St Louis and shot his way to an Olympic Games gold medal. It was a big moment for the player and a significant day for the sport itself, because this would be the last time that golf would feature at the prestigious event for another 114 years. The next time a golfer would tee off for gold, would be more than a century later at Rio 2016. For many top players, it was a chance to compete on the world’s biggest stage and win a truly rare prize: an Olympic Games medal for golf.

As the Official Timekeeper of every sport at Tokyo 2020, OMEGA was central to the golf events, providing scoreboards placed at ground level on four dedicated tees. The scoreboards were equipped with radar measurement systems, which captured and displayed tee-off information to spectators. Along with the player’s name and current score, the scoreboard showed a live output of the stroke speed, estimated distance and height of the stroke.
