A CROSS-INTERVIEW BETWEEN VALÉRIE MESSIKA AND PASTRY CHEF FRANÇOIS DESHAYES. CREATIVE AND GUSTATORY INSIGHTS INTO THIS EXCEPTIONAL COLLABORATION.
  • What does Le Meurice, this mythical place in the heart of Paris, inspire in you?

Valérie Messika : I have a very special connection with this institution, as my husband proposed to me during a dinner in this palace. There is truly a unique alchemy between grandeur and intimacy in this place. It’s a historic hotel that has perfectly blended with the modernity of its time. I admire Philippe Starck’s work; he brings a quirky touch that’s a bit “out of the box,” similar to Messika. The three-gold effect colors also remind me of our house: French gilding, the contemporary mirror-polish of the designer, and the warm coppery-pink tones of Ara Starck’s work. There’s a magical and unique vibration that emanates from this place.

  • For the holidays, you’re creating an unprecedented trompe-l’oeil log; how did this idea come about?

François Deshayes : I love the idea of surprise when opening a jewelry box, and I really wanted to replicate that. For me, it was important to immerse myself in the Messika universe, to echo the shapes and colors of the box and the pieces. We focused on every detail, even replicating the fine gold ribbon on the side of the box, showcasing the iconic Move motif while accentuating the three golds and, of course, enhancing the diamond! It was an exciting journey of research and development for us.

  • What did you enjoy about this unprecedented project?

François Deshayes : For me, Messika is an impressive jewelry house, and Valérie’s career is equally remarkable. I wanted to meet the challenge and impress in return. It was also a pleasure to step outside the norm, to work in Messika’s offices with their team, gaining different perspectives on the usual projects and challenging ourselves.

Valérie Messika : I love the idea of this pastry trompe-l’oeil shaped like a Move. It’s a truly magical creation in terms of both flavor and form. Just like in jewelry, it requires excellence and precision. I really appreciate this blend of simplicity and essential flavors: the joy of praline chocolate and the subtlety of Madagascar vanilla. It’s exquisitely balanced! It’s also a symbolic log for me, with this trio of diamonds so dear to our house—three stones representing the symbol of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. A beautiful image to celebrate the holidays across generations.

  • Any tasting advice?

Valérie Messika : You must absolutely let yourself be taken by the surprise of the moment. Lift the beautiful chocolate box to discover this trompe-l’oeil log. The pleasure for the eyes combined with the accuracy of taste is divine! The lightness of vanilla mousse combined with the crunchiness of praline and the richness of chocolate is heavenly!

François Deshayes : It’s a log of pleasure! An invitation to have fun and play with the trompe-l’oeil elements: daring to lift the precious chocolate lid, biting into a vanilla diamond, or enjoying a piece of the box as a treat. I love this idea of simplicity in praline-vanilla and praline-chocolate flavors, but with precise harmonies. They evoke almost childlike flavors that awaken the inner child in each of us.
