Takashi Murakami’s multidisciplinary practice – with its unique blend of ancestral painting techniques, anime, sci-fi, and pop culture – has been internationally acclaimed since the 1990s, and his sculptures, paintings, video works, and associated products exhibited in major galleries and institutions around the world including the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong. Additionally, his works are in the collections of many prestigious institutions, among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Born in Tokyo in the 1960s, Murakami studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he specialized in nihonga or traditional Japanese painting. Its 2D principles informed his pioneering Superflat Manifesto, first published in 2000, which flattened the distinctions between “high” and “low” art, commercial and conceptual work, and Japanese and Western aesthetics. He has since created a range of characters that are both whimsical and unsettling to populate his Superflat, including iconic and recurring motifs such as flowers, eyes, and mushrooms, as well as Mr. DOB (1993), the first original character in contemporary art, and Kaikai & Kiki, whose names evoke a yokai-like presence.

The curated works by Takashi Murakami at Art Basel Hong Kong are housed in a fittingly exuberant booth that resembles a giant metallic Louis Vuitton trunk lined in acid-green fabric. Entering the booth, visitors pass between a pair of large-scale statues, Zoucho-kun and Tamon-kun (2003), and the enigmatic Superflat Jellyfish Eyes 1 screen (2003) – each works from the Collection as presented at Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2018. The artistic discovery continues with a selection of other major works from Murakami’s audacious oeuvre, from sculptures to print work to textiles, as well as a cycle of his video works presented in the booth’s “secret” screening room. Also exhibited are works the artist has created as part of his long-standing collaboration with Louis Vuitton – an artistic partnership recently renewed with the Louis Vuitton Murakami 2025 re-edition collection – including celebrated pieces from Louis Vuitton’s Heritage Collection such as the Monogram Multicolore Marilyn Trunk (2003), and Monogramouflage (2008), the iconic pattern fusing camouflage and the Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas that features on both a large canvas work and a classic Louis Vuitton Keepall bag.

Louis Vuitton’s presence at Art Basel Hong Kong is a demonstration of the House’s committed relationship to the arts which started nearly a century ago when Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the founder’s grandson, began commissioning artists to collaborate. Since 1988, Louis Vuitton has continued this legacy by collaborating with some of the biggest names in modern art and design, including Sol LeWitt, James Rosenquist, Cesar, and Olafur Eliasson. It has curated exhibitions by artists such as Sophie Calle, Dan Flavin, Alberto Giacometti and Gerhard Richter in its Espaces Louis Vuitton, instore contemporary art spaces, and has also created innovative large-scale global art projects, such as the 2022 collaboration with Yayoi Kusama. The Fondation Louis Vuitton, which opened in October 2014 in Paris, embodies the commitment of LVMH – and Louis Vuitton in particular – to corporate philanthropy in support of the arts and creative endeavours. The building, commissioned from Frank Gehry, is already recognised as an emblematic example of 21st-century architecture and has already welcomed millions of visitors from the entire world.
