Imane Ayissi Presents His New Haute Couture Spring Summer 2025 Collection: MSSAM/ASSOU
Luxferity, 27.01.2025
What African and Haute Couture garments have in common is that they are both made-to-measure and handcrafted, with the emphasis on decoration and ornamentation on the surface of the textile and garment. Contemporary fashion, like contemporary architecture and design, minimises decoration in favour of structure, architecture and form. Cut is what is emphasised. Textiles are chosen without patterns, based on their structural quality or texture. This war between old and new doesn't suit me. I like ‘decorated’ fabrics as much as the simple shape of a garment, when it's perfect and has magnificent volume, because it's often easier to tell stories through fashion.

It was with this in mind that I approached this collection, revisiting Couture classics with all kinds of decorative effects, largely made using African know-how: We find woven motifs from the Kenté of Ghana or the Ntutuere from the Bamoun region of Cameroon, printed motifs with tie-dye from Cameroon, embroidery made in Senegal according to a traditional skill used to decorate large ceremonial garments or even the application of raffia from Madagascar... But also through pure exercises in cutting and the search for volume or seeking to go beyond this opposition with dresses where the decorative effects are no longer applied but become the structure of the garment.
