On the occasion of her historic nomination for Best Actress for her role in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ Gucci and Creative Director Sabato De Sarno, were honored to be selected by Lily Gladstone to dress her for the 96th Academy Awards.

Lily Gladstone selected Indigenous designer Joe Big Mountain (Mohawk, Cree, Comanche) to collaborate with the House to create two gowns for the evening that pay homage to the actress whom has heritage from the Siksikaitsitapi and NiMíiPuu Nations.

The collaboration showcases and amplifies the work of the Indigenous talents to pay tribute to the historic moment. Speaking about the collaboration, Joe Big Mountain and wife Sunshine stated: “To have Lily choose to wear our work and to be able to partner with Gucci and Sabato is just so near and dear, not only to our family and our hearts but to our people as a whole. And to have her nominated for this is just one small step to a giant win for all of us.”

Both gowns stand as testaments to the artistry and heritage embedded in Indigenous communities, incorporating porcupine quillwork—a sacred and ancestral art form passed down through generations. “For the dresses, we utilized a couple different styles of quillwork, one being zigzag stitch and one being a wrap. These techniques are passed down through family and certain people in the community that are willing to teach it,”Joe Big Mountain and Sunshine explained. The Big Mountains were able to assemble a team of talented local Indigenous artists to the Oneida Reservation in Wisconsin - where they reside, Kendrick Powless-Crouch (Oneida, Yakima, Skokomish), Jossalyn Metoxen (Oneida), Seven Oshkabewisens (Mohawk, Cree, Comanche), Dionne Jacobs (Oneida), Paige Skenandore (Oneida) & Aryien Stevens (Seneca). The team helped Big Mountain execute 216 individual quilled petals that adorned Gladstones velvet cape.

Quillwork embellishes the neckline of the first gown that Lily Gladstone will wear on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, a midnight blue velvet design with a bustier silhouette complemented by a matching cape, also adorned with floral quillwork motifs. For the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Lily Gladstone will wear a floor-length design with cape short sleeves and cascading chevron beaded fringe, and quillwork embroidery along the neckline.
