British actors Harris Dickinson and James McAvoy joined Creative Director Simon Holloway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to celebrate the exhibit, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.

Paying tribute to the legendary designer, each actor’s custom look captures the understated elegance of Lagerfeld’s early aesthetic. An original source of inspiration for his iconic personal style, Count Robert de Montesquiou a French writer, poet, art collector and famed socialite provided a fitting starting point for Holloway at the beginning of the creative process.

Realised in a luxe black wool barathea, Harris wears a custom double breasted 3 piece suit. Modernity meets tailoring tradition as considered details, including a barathea peak lapel and covered buttons, achieve a contemporary finish. Discreetly embroidered initials, just above the lefthand jacket pocket, reference Lagerfeld’s own love of personalisation, whilst a half spread point collar shirt and chalkstripe fine Worsted wool tie further mirror his likeness. The look is finished with a Cartier Tank Must watch and pair of Cartier Tradition Ecus Comptes clip brooches from 1935.

Showcasing the tailoring excellence of the House, James wears a Bespoke single breasted 3 piece evening suit, handcrafted by dunhill’s master tailor at the prestigious London flagship, Bourdon House. The pinnacle of dunhill’s tailoring proposition, the midnight blue merino wool and mohair jacket is elevated by a contrast black silk Ottoman peak lapel. Monochrome underpinnings evoke a modern eveningwear elegance; crisp and precise, the white cotton voile wing tip shirt is paired with a Marcella waistcoat and wide silk polka dot tie. To complete the look, James wears a Panthère de Cartier pocket jewel, new Reverso Tribute Chronograph by Jaeger LeCoultre and carries a black handmade wooden fan a spirited nod to one of Lagerfeld’s signature accessories.

Immortalised in paintings by Giovanni Boldini and James Whistler, design cues were derived from portraits of de Montesquiou , alongside codes from Lagerfeld’s own distinctive wardrobe. Beautifully constructed eveningwear, uncompromising in fabrication and fit, is accented by sophisticated details including generous lapels, contrast cuffs and layered elements recalling the flamboyant, hedonistic flair of both figures.

“It is an honour to celebrate Karl Lagerfeld one of the greatest designers of our generation. His integrity, ground breaking vision and innovative approach echoes the pioneering nature of our founder Alfred Dunhill, and it has been inspiring to explore his rich and extraordinary legacy. To dress Harris and James for this special occasion is a privilege. Two magnetic leading men who embody a refined masculine elegance, they truly reflect the values of the House today.”Simon Holloway, Creative Director.
