The Crown Collection comprises four styles: Hampstead, Notting Hill, Mayfair and Belgravia, each a limited-edition masterpiece of artisanal creation. From start to finish, every pair takes 58 days to craft – a meticulous process that speaks to Church’s exacting standards. Each step in the process has been carefully studied in order to fully showcase the excellence of English shoe manufacturing, executed by highly-skilled team of specialists performing countless operations, all by hand.

The process begins at Northampton workshop with a detailed selection of the calfskin, examined centimetre by centimetre by a dedicated expert and cut by hand to avoid any blemishes in the material. Embellishments such as broguing, eyelet holes and stitching are applied to the upper by hand with impeccable precision. The leather is then kept in a humidity room for at least 48 hours in preparation to take its final form.

Once the leather has been shaped over the last, the dye is applied by hand. This painstaking process alone takes three days, but results in creating unique colourings and nuances on each pair of shoes – a distinct and remarkable patina that only comes from a process such as this.

After this, a traditionally tanned oak bark sole is fitted with a particular London Waist Shank that adds an elegant contour to the bottom of the shoe. When the sole is attached to the upper and the stitching is completely concealed, the finish is applied manually. The name of the model is hand-written inside of the upper in a special calligraphy, the laces are looped in and, for some styles, the toe is bulled to a high shine with the time-honoured technique of a cloth-covered finger.
