As an official partner of the Venice Biennale International Film Festival for the fourth consecutive year, Cartier is demonstrating its sensitivity to contemporary creation in cinema, an art form with which the Maison has forged long-standing ties.

The 81st Festival will take place from 28th August to 7th September, 2024. These eleven days of cinematic celebration will be punctuated by numerous screenings and evenings featuring guests, ambassadors and Friends of the Maison. Isabelle Huppert, president of the jury and Friend of the Maison, will present a number of awards, including the prestigious Golden Lion.

As part of this collaboration, the Venice International Film Festival and Cartier pay tribute to exceptional filmmakers through the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award, given to a figure who has made a significant contribution to the contemporary film industry. Previous winners include Ridley Scott (2021), Walter Hill (2022) and Wes Anderson (2023). This year, the prize will go to director Claude Lelouch.

WHERE CARTIER MEETS CINEMA

The story of Cartier and cinema is one of different perspectives, shared creativity and a common dedication to craftsmanship. Since the beginning of the 20th century, jewellery craftsmanship has paved its way in the realm of cinema, which reflects a relentless quest for beauty and captures the very essence of the Maison's creations.

As part of its cultural commitment to arts and crafts, in 2022 Cartier inaugurated a series of masterclasses entitled "The Art and Craft of Cinema" organised in collaboration with the Venice Biennale.

These masterclasses aim to explore the interconnected nature of the artistic disciplines involved in filmmaking, and to highlight the collaborative processes that bring a director's vision to life. This series showcases the diversity of talent in the film industry, from those we see on screen to those who work behind the scenes.

Open to all Venice Film Festival accreditation holders, this year's masterclasses will be held at the Match Point Arena on the Venice Lido. They will host world-renowned talents from a variety of film disciplines who will share their collaborative practices.

The first will be a conversation about music in film, hosted by composer Nicola Piovani and director and screenwriter Cristina Comencini. The second will look at the link between music and directing. Director Claude Lelouch and singer-songwriter Barbara Pravi will share their perspectives on the subject. Finally, the third masterclass will highlight the connections between an actor and the many creative collaborators whose work is essential to the success of a film. Richard Gere, accompanied by Mario Cordova, his Italian voice actor, will discuss the synergies between acting, screenwriting, lighting, musical composition and dubbing.

These conversations, moderated by Stéphane Lerouge, film music expert and curator of the "Ecoutez le cinéma!" ("Listen to Film!") collection, will shed valuable light on the behind-the-scenes workings of filmmaking.

In the same spirit of celebration, this year's festival promises moments of rare intensity, where the art of film will be revealed in all its splendour. These include the screening of the film biography of Maria Callas, Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, which will take place on 29th August. As a jewellery tribute to this legendary icon, Cartier loaned several iconic pieces from its heritage collection, the Cartier Collection, for the making of this biographical film.

CARTIER AND VENICE

This collaboration with the Venice International Film Festival is also an opportunity for Cartier to celebrate beauty and creativity, starting with that of Venice, which the Maison supports through a series of initiatives aimed at preserving the city's living heritage and contributing to the ongoing development of its culture.

Cartier also supports innovative exhibitions at two of the city's most famous institutions.

For the retrospective Jean Cocteau: The Juggler's Revenge at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, exhibition sponsor Cartier is lending the poet's famous academician's sword, awarded by the Académie Française, from its heritage collection.

The Venice International Foundation, supported by Cartier, presents Musei delle Lacrime ("Museum of Tears") at the Museo Correr in partnership with the Fondazione Civici Musei di Venezia. This project, conceived by artist Francesco Vezzoli, features works from over twenty years of artistic creation, as well as pieces specially devised for the occasion.

The Maison is also supporting the restoration and renovation of two of Venice's most iconic venues, the Teatro Verde and the Conservatorio di Musica Benedetto Marcello.
