Spring 2025 is a reconstructed memory of summer, of a place, of an idea.

Diotima Presents Its New Spring-Summer 2025 Women’s Collection: Déjà Vu

The collection emerged from a vivid Caribbean dream. Memories of revivalist ritual dances by the banks of roaring rivers, scenes of Sunday church in the rolling hills and dancehall street parties meld into a singular vision. A melodic déjà vu interrupts both the collection and the soundtrack – a junction of subdued sounds and echoes, re-imagined dancehall, and clips of meditations on syncretic cultural traditions from archival footage.

Closeted, secretive traditions in Jamaica are uncovered, romanticized. The signifiers of these mysterious rituals are abstracted– blood red crochet headscarves, opaque tights worn under white dresses, and exposed slip hems reveal interior worlds. The hem lace, a broderie anglaise reminiscent of palm trees or weed leaves or both. These forms wrap around hems, down the leg of jeans, across the chest of a blouse.

In direct tension with this performative properness is the overt sensuality of dancehall. Silver stud paillettes embellish satin dresses with diaphanous georgette skirts. A sheer organza halter top and perfect pencil skirt, crystal mesh gowns and platform wedge sandals evoke early 2000’s dancehall.

The Caribbean sea permeates the collection. An intarsia knit with looped fringe mimics the fluid slow movement of sargassum, realized most directly in seaweed green. Melted Paillette embellishments evoke Hellshire oyster shells in mixed metal, and barnacles in white. These oyster shell-like paillettes rim and cascade down crocus bag linen, in fluvial shapes, mimicking the rolling rivers.

Encrusted eyelashes resemble coral reef and again barnacles and child-like finger painted eyelids in chalk white conjure up obeah in the beauty by Kanako Takase. The complexity of the Caribbean woman— proper and sophisticated, sensual and bold—is captured in the Sunday church-meets-dancehall hairstyles by Joey George.

Everything is transformed. Familiar elements are hybridized and rendered abstract. Memories from decades and centuries past are preserved and reimagined.
