I’ve always been fascinated by Parisian style. My theory is that the unique way of dressing in my hometown is built upon an impeccable balancing act, with the most stylish of Parisians perfectly playing off a long, enduring heritage of refined elegance with their own, very distinctive, streetwise attitude. For this season, my team and I have worked to reflect the dual strands that work to set apart modern this city’s dressing. Relying on our atelier’s savoir-faire, we’ve mirrored the fresh and confident spirit of today’s Parisians and their ability to meld two incredible heritages into one impressive elegant style.

In this city, it’s pretty hard not to feel a bit awed by all that came before us. The monuments, adornments and architecture that form the backdrop of our daily lives constantly remind us of a legacy of extraordinary royal, imperial and artistic victories and traditions. That obviously has an effect on our eyes, our preferences and our choices. But what really sets this city’s sense of style apart is how the influence of all that heritage, elegance and refined embellishment is wonderfully counterbalanced by the always-fresh power of Parisians’ famed self-assurance. There’s a unique spirit here that we can sum up as the Titi Parisian—a usually appealing, often sassy and continually confident urban flair that has been celebrated in French literature and popular culture since the days of Victor Hugo.

This collection’s designs reflect all sides of that fascinating style equation. The abiding influence of French military, aristocratic and couture histories can be seen in Brandenburg jackets and great coats, expertly crafted lace and feather creations, print and trompe l’oeil references to classic statues and even riffs on the chandelier’s crystals and curving silhouette. Newsboy caps (gavroches), twists on varsity jackets and an abundance of black leather and denim reflect the more rebellious Titi Parisian variables of the Parisian style formula. Among the more surprising tradition-meets-today pairings are rich golden embroideries added to denim, traditional military embellishments flawlessly rendered in black crêpe and an array of clever footwear choices, including deft tweaks on soccer cleats and biker boots. Throughout, one can spot new plays on house signatures, including a multitude of patterns referencing Monsieur Balmain’s love for leopard prints.

The season’s accessories build upon the collection’s spirit of Parisian nonchalance, melding signature elements of the house’s heritage with the fresh outlook of today’s Balmain Army. Inspired by Monsieur Balmain’s iconic mid-century designs and setting an eye-catching oversized golden buckles front and center, the second generation designs of the Anthem luxury bags continue to highlight the unmistakably Balmain belted silhouette. For Pre-Fall, we’ve expanded the line to include a chic envelope pouch. In addition, the same bold buckle and cinched belt combination tops off a series of Anthem footwear designs, from sleek sandals to high boots. Our elegant Sync collection of bags and shoes incorporate one of Pierre Balmain’s favorite couture adornments: golden chains fastened by chic lockets. Ranging from thin to maxi widths, the chains hug soft leather bags, loafers, sandals and heels and are branded with a gilded PB logo.

Of course, this collection’s blending of heritage and modern savvy to create a new type of relaxed luxury is exactly what this house has been doing ever since Pierre Balmain’s introduced his first collection almost eighty years ago. That exceptional talent of Monsieur Balmain was captured in one of my favorite house images: a photo from Cecil Beaton’s very first Balmain shooting, which was used to illustrate Gertrude Stein’s famous December 1945 Vogue essay about her close friend Pierre Balmain’s premiere couture collection. Beaton’s photograph focuses on one of the most commented-upon designs from that original presentation—Balmain’s remarkable couture spin on the everyday vareuse, the classic fisherman’s top from Brittany. That iconic shot makes clear our founder’s singular mastery in transforming popular French pieces into fresh and modern luxury designs—and it’s clearly that legacy that continues to guide us today.
